Essex… The name probably brings a few things to mind – gorgeous coastlines, cute villages, maybe a little glamour thanks to TOWIE (a very guilty pleasure of mine!). But as someone who’s spent a fair bit of time exploring the county, I can tell you there’s a seriously good food scene here too. Think way beyond pub grub – fresh seafood, artisanal ingredients, and globally inspired dishes that could rival anywhere in London.
So, whether you’re planning a special night out or just fancy a casual bite during a shopping trip, here’s my take on some of the best places to eat. Consider this your unofficial foodie map of Essex!
Fête Grays Yard – Chelmsford
If you’re after a gorgeous little brunch spots in Essex, Fête Grays Yard is one of my favourites. They also do lunch & dinner options, but their breakfasts are their strong point in my opinion! I don’t usually love a sweet breakfast, so I love that they’ve plenty of savoury options available so early in the morning. Their breakfast kebab (specifically with lamb merguez sausage), is delicious, as is their smoked beans on toast.
Le Talbooth – Dedham
On the banks of the River Stour, Le Talbooth is as much about the view as it is the food. I would particularly recommend this spot for those extra-special date nights and celebrations as it is on the pricier side. It is well worth it though as the menu is seasonal and sophisticated – we were blown away! A highlight for me was the ‘nduja crusted fillet of halibut served with tiger prawns and beurre blanc… i’ll be coming back for more!
Galvin Green Man – Howe Street, Chelmsford
A pub with a Michelin star? Yep, and it’s delicious! The Essex-famous Galvin brothers have taken a historic 1341 building and turned it into a cosy yet refined dining spot. Think classic British dishes done to the next level. I would recommend heading to Galvin on Sunday for a classic country roast dinner.
The Company Shed – West Mersea
If you’re a seafood lover, you cannot skip this place. It’s not as fancy as some of the other places mentioned on this list – but instead a very rough-and-ready tiny shack, with a super relaxed vibe. You bring your own wine and bread to The Company Shed, which you can enjoy with the most delicious seafood. Think oysters, crab, fish – whatever’s freshest that day. We had Mersea oysters and crab cakes that were so good I’m still thinking about them!!
Aspera – Benfleet
For Mediterranean/Turkish vibes, gorgeous seafood, and even better cocktails, Aspera is a fab choice. Charcoal-grilled meats, fresh seafood, and friendly service – perfect for a casual meal out as it has a very reasonable price point. Every dish we tried was packed with flavour, and the atmosphere made it feel like a proper night out rather than just a dinner stop.
Super Sushi – Romford
Tucked inside The Liberty Shopping Centre, this little sushi spot is a must-visit restaurant in Romford. It’s incredibly reasonably priced, particularly in the middle of a shopping day. My usual order usually consists of a warm donburi bowl and their signature sushi nigiri – the seared salmon is my favourite! Definitely stop here if you’re ever nearby – it’s quick, tasty, super Instagram-worthy too.
All Things Food & Drink With Savery Grazing
And that wraps up my Essex recommendations! If you’re planning your own trip down South, I hope this gives you some delicious inspo – whether you’re after street food, cocktails, or somewhere a little more special.
