Anything in miniature form is bound to be a hit with guests, and these mini jacket potato canapés are no exception! Perfect for cocktail parties or as an appetiser at your next get-together, they’re easy to make and absolutely delicious. I recently brought them to a Christmas Eve do, and the platter was left empty within minutes!

Plus, once you’ve perfected these mini jacket potato canapes, you can top them with absolutely anything. Whilst I’ve stuck with a classic combination of tangy creme fraiche, spicy chorizo, and fresh, oniony chives, you can truly get creative with what you add. Go extra fancy with a spoonful of caviar, or keep them veggie with a sprinkle of goat’s cheese and honey…

Method

Follow these steps to make our Mini Jacket Potato Canapés

1. Roast Your Jacket Potatoes

Preheat your oven to 200°C before scrubbing and sorting through your baby potatoes. Ensure the outside of the potatoes are free of mud and other debris. Choose 20-25 of the best looking potatoes (ideally all a similar size) and pop these into a baking dish with olive oil, salt and pepper. Bake for around 45 minutes, turning halfway, until cooked through and slightly crisp on the outside. Leave to cool.

2. Prepare Your Toppings

Whilst your mini jacket potatoes are roasting in the oven, now is a good time to start preparing the canape toppings. Finely chop a small sprig of chives and pop these into a ramekin for later. Next, chop 50g of chorizo into 0.5cm cubes (or as small as you can go!), and fry in a pan until crisp around the edges. This should take 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool and set aside.

3. Assemble Your Mini Jacket Potato Canapes

Now for the fun part! Using a sharp knife, make a small ‘x’ on the top of each potato. Gently squeeze the base with your fingers to open up the top and create a little pocket. Then, spoon in half a teaspoon of creme fraiche, depending on your preference. Next, top each potato with the crispy chorizo and sprinkle over the freshly chopped chives for a small pop of colour.

4. Serve Immediately

Finally, arrange adorable mini jacket potato canapés on your favourite serving platter, and enjoy immediately for the best flavour and texture. Enjoy!

Can You Make Mini Jacket Potato Canapés Ahead Of Time?

Yes absolutely – which makes hosting so much easier. Simply roast the potatoes and prepare the chorizo and chive toppings ahead of time. Just remember to store each element separately in the fridge and assemble the canapés just before serving to maximise freshness.

How Else Can You Top Mini Jacket Potato Canapés?

Mini jacket potatoes are the perfect plain base for almost any toppings. So, if you want to get creative, or you don’t have chorizo and creme fraiche to hand, try these combinations instead:

  • Cream cheese & smoked salmon
  • Creme fraiche & caviar
  • Chipotle mayonnaise & pancetta
  • Pancetta & chipotle mayonnaise (similar to our popular Smoky Pancetta Waffle Bites!)
  • Goats cheese & honey
  • Brie & cranberry sauce
  • Prawns & guacamole
