If you’re looking for a low-cost, easy, and genuinely fun alternative to a trip to the cinema (or any out-of-the-house activity, for that matter), hosting a movie night at home is the perfect solution.

My fiancé and I actually have a movie night every Sunday evening. We take turns choosing the film, switch our phones off, and use it as a way to reconnect and properly unwind after a busy weekend. It’s simple, but it’s something we really look forward to.

Whether you’re planning a cosy date night, a girls’ evening in, or something special for the kids, a movie night can be tailored entirely to your vibe. Hosting a girls’ night? Choose a classic rom-com, pour your favourite rosé and lay out some indulgent snacks. Planning something for little ones? Think animated favourites, comfy floor cushions and plenty of sweet treats.

Here’s how to host the perfect at-home movie night at home.

Setting Up Your Space

Creating the right atmosphere makes all the difference. Think about where you want to nestle in for the evening. Then:

  • Bring out extra throws, cushions, or even the duvet from upstairs. Don’t be afraid to create a little nest on the sofa (or on the floor if you’re going all out).
  • Make sure you have somewhere practical to keep drinks and nibbles. A coffee table works perfectly, but if you’re lounging on the floor, consider a low tray or picnic-style setup.
  • Turn off harsh overhead lights. Opt for lamps, fairy lights, candles (safely placed!), or even the fireplace if you have one. If it’s still light outside, close the curtains to block out any light.
  • If you’ve got a projector tucked away, now’s the time to use it. It instantly elevates the experience and makes the evening feel more like a special event.

Top Tip: Take it outside! If you’re hosting during the warmer summer months, consider moving your movie night outdoors. A projector, blankets, and a few lanterns can transform your garden into the dreamiest open-air cinema.

Snacks

Popcorn is non-negotiable on movie night. But it has to be something a bit special – sweet and salted simply doesn’t cut it around here! We were recently sent some samples from Tommy Popcorn, a new brand on the scene. They do a bunch of insane flavours – but Sweet Cinnamon and Mallow Magic are my new favourites!

Onto the other movie night snacks. You don’t need a massive spread – just a few thoughtful options that people can graze on whilst watching the film. Here are a few of our go-tos:

  • Grazing boards – ideally a mix of cheeses, cured meats, crackers, fruit, pickles, and chutneys.
  • Sweets & chocolate – perfect for kids (and adults who like to sneak a treat).
  • Hot picky bits – baked camembert, M&S party snacks, or mini cocktail sausages.
  • Crudités & dips – something lighter, like hummus or white bean dip.

And if you’re feeling fancy, our blog has some perfect finger-food recipes that work brilliantly for movie nights – homemade sausage rolls, white chocolate Biscoff truffles, parmesan puffs… the list goes on.

Drinks

Drinks set the tone just as much as the snacks. If it’s a grown-up night, popping a bottle of bubbly or a well-paired wine feels extra special. Light, salty snacks? Grab a crisp white or rosé. Richer bites? Red wine is your friend.

If you’re a true hostess-with-the-mostess, you can take it one step further with a themed cocktail. A few ideas:

  • Rom-coms: Try a Pink Gin Fizz or a Strawberry Daiquiri
  • Classic action or spy movies: A Martini (shaken, not stirred – obviously) instantly feels cinematic.
  • Tropical or adventure films: Mojitos or Piña Coladas bring the holiday vibes to your living room.
  • Horror or spooky films: Go dark with a Black Russian or an Espresso Martini.

For the kids, milkshakes, juice, or even hot chocolate with all the toppings make the night feel just as festive. A self-serve hot chocolate station is a favourite in our house – with extra marshmallows, of course.

Add Extra Touches

If you want to make your movie night feel like more than just a film:

  • Pick a movie still in cinemas or not available on free streaming yet (they usually cost under £10 to buy or even less to rent!).
  • Send out cute digital invites via Canva in advance.
  • Create “cinema tickets” for kids – it’s so silly, but it adds to the fun.
